Vibration analysis basics for reliability teams
Most mechanical failures announce themselves in vibration long before they cause a breakdown.
Most mechanical failures announce themselves in vibration long before they cause a breakdown.
Vibration analysis is the workhorse of condition monitoring because rotating machinery is honest about its health. Imbalance, misalignment, bearing wear and looseness each produce a signature — learn to read the signatures and you can see a failure developing weeks before it lands.
- The four signatures worth knowing
- Imbalance — a strong peak at 1× running speed
- Misalignment — elevated 1× and 2× running speed, often axial
- Bearing wear — high-frequency energy at bearing defect frequencies
- Looseness — a 'haystack' of harmonics across the spectrum
Manual routes — a technician with a handheld analyser — still work well for stable, slow-moving machines. The gap is faults that develop between readings: continuous wireless sensors close it, trending vibration around the clock so nothing develops unseen.
- Routes vs continuous
You don't need to interpret spectra on day one. Overall vibration levels with sensible warning and alarm thresholds catch most developing faults; spectral analysis deepens the diagnosis once a trend alarms.
